What Makes Me Scottish?

Being Scottish is more than just being born in one of the world’s most beautifully green and rugged countries; it’s a state of being!

There’s something about the Scots that embodies determination: We’re the underdogs, always believing the best can happen. It’s not just a feeling; it’s the characteristic of who we are.

Even my coming into the world, I was surrounded by parents who believed I would be born alive when the doctors told them (in the days before ultrasounds) that I might be stillborn. Nope. My parents were determined to pray me into the world safe and well.

A timid child I didn’t quite live up to the true character of being Scottish, but over the years, I have grown into my heritage! Determined,  purposeful, unwavering and resolute!

It reminds me of our national flower, the thistle. It flourishes in rugged, wild places, and I’ve lived in a few of them.  It stands tall and unwavering in all seasons, allowing nothing to break or bend it.  There have been seasons that almost broke me, but my faith allowed me to be unwavering in all that life threw at me.  And it stands out with its soft purple flower. I don’t love standing out in general, but when it is for a greater purpose, I can live with that!

While I’ve lived more of my life outside of Scotland than in it, at my core, I will always be a Scot and will forever be proud of that.
